Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard
Triangular Mass (2016) - heimsfrumflutningur / world premiere

‘Triangular Mass’ will be performed by an ensemble of 50+ triangle players. The piece is performable by all, and therefore the ensemble will consist of volunteers, all playing triangles in different sizes, creating a crystalline and prism like sound. The sound of the individual triangle and the individual player is dissolved and the sound reappears in a new collective form.

Hann hefur gefið út fjölda platna og árið 2013 skapaði hann hljóðheim fyrir René Magritte sýninguna ‘The Mystery of the Ordinary’ í MoMA. Hann hlaut verðlaun hjá Danish Arts Foundation 2007 og Leonie Sonning Scholarship 2006.

Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard is turning sound inside out.

By multiplying instruments again and again he makes the sound transcend itself. The sound of the individual instrument dissolves and reappears as untouched sound.

His interest in multiplying sound, has lead to the ‘SOUND X SOUND’ series, which is a series of works where each piece is an exploration of one single instrument that is multiplied e.g. music for 9 pianos, 18 clarinets, 10 hi-hats etc.

NLL about his method of sonic multiplication:

“Imagine entering a room with vivid acoustics, led with people talking across the room. They are having separate conversations and close by you can identify the language and understand the words. Stepping away from the tables and standing in the doorway, you can no longer distinguish one word from another and the human language ceases to exist. All conversations melt together and transform into a new sound. A sound of people without words and languages but with an innate sound, as we hear a flock of squawking geese or the sound of the wind blowing through the leaves. When language is dissolved and words loose their meaning, sound remains – pure, free and open to all ears.”
