Setning Myrkra músíkdaga 2026 fer fram í Hörpuhorni, gegnt Eldborgarsal á 2. Hæð Hörpu. Við setningu hátíðarinnar flytur Kammerkórinn Huldur fjölbreytta efnisskrá eftir meðlimi kórsins, en kórinn, sem samanstendur af ungu fólki á aldrinum 18-26 ára, hefur að marki að virkja eigin meðlimi til tónsmíða.

The opening event of Dark Music Days 2026 will take place in Hörpuhorn, opposite Eldborg Hall on the 2nd floor of Harpa. At the festival’s opening, the chamber choir Huldur will perform a diverse program featuring works by members of the choir. The choir, which consists of young people aged 18–26, aims to encourage its own members to compose music.

Tónleikar Sinfóníuhljómsveitar Íslands á Myrkum músíkdögum er einn af fastapunktum í starfsári hljómsveitarinnar og jafnframt mikið tilhlökkunarefni fyrir unnendur íslenskrar og alþjóðlegrar samtímatónlistar. Á hátíðinni í ár leikur sveitin fjölbreytta efnisskrá nýrra og nýlegra verka höfunda af ólíkum kynslóðum og úr ólíkum áttum tónlistarlífsins. Það er skoska tónskáldið Sir James MacMillan sem stjórnar sveitinni á tónleikum sveitarinnar í ár og stýrir þar flutningi á eigin básúnukonsert (2017) í túlkun sveitarinnar og Jóns Arnars Einarssonar, básúnuleikara og leiðara básúnudeildar Sinfóníuhljómsveitar Íslands. Frumflytur sveitin tvö ný tónverk tónskáldanna Báru Gísladóttur og Kjartan Sveinsson, ásamt því að leika Hljómsveitarkonsert nr. 2 eftir Snorra Sigfús Birgisson.

The Iceland Symphony Orchestra's Dark Music Days concert is one of the focal points of the orchestra's operating year and also a source of great anticipation for lovers of Icelandic and international contemporary music. At this year's festival, the band will play a diverse repertoire of new and recent works by authors of different generations and from different walks of life. Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan conducts the orchestra's concerts this year, conducting his own trombone concerto interpreted by the orchestra and Jón Arnar Einarsson, trombonist and leader of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra's trombone section. The orchestra will premiere two new compositions by composers Bára Gísladóttir and Kjartan Sveinsson, as well as playing Snorri Sigfús Birgisson's Orchestral Concerto No. 2.

Í verkum Haraldar fléttast ólíkar efniskenndir, tungumál og hljóðmyndir saman á margslunginn hátt og birtast áhorfendum sem rýmisverk, hljóðinnsetningar og gjörningar. Þau taka mið af aðstæðum hverju sinni og leitast við að vekja staðaranda með fjölbreyttum inngripum og aðferðum. Verk hans eiga sér stað á stefnumóti ólíkra miðla og bjóða gjarnan upp á virka þátttöku sýningargesta í síbreytilegri merkingarsköpun.

Á Myrkum músíkdögum í ár frumflytur Haraldur Jónsson í samstarfi við nemendur sviðslistadeildar Listaháskóla Íslands verkið Hlað í almannarými Hörpu.

In Haraldur’s works, different materials, languages, and soundscapes are intricately interwoven, appearing to audiences as spatial installations, sound works, and performances. His pieces respond to their surroundings and seek to evoke a sense of place through diverse interventions and methods. They exist at the crossroads of various media and often invite active participation from visitors, who contribute to an ever-shifting creation of meaning.

At Dark Music Days this year, Haraldur Jónsson, in collaboration with students from the Department of Performing Arts at the Iceland University of the Arts, will premiere the work Cast in the public spaces of Harpa.

In this concert, the audience may share the stage of the Eldborg concert hall with three outstanding soloists. There they will perform works by composers they have worked closely with. The singer Þórgunnur Anna Örnólfsdóttir will perform a work by Finnur Karlsson; Ingólfur Vilhjálmsson on clarinet will perform a solo piece by Haukur Þór Harðarson and Tinna Þórsteinsdóttir will perform two solo piano pieces by her mother Karólina Eiríksdóttir. 

Í tengslum við tónleika þýska málmblásarahópsins APPARAT á Myrkum músíkdögum í ár hefur hópurinn haldið vinnusmiðjur við tónlistardeild Listaháskóla Íslands. Þar hafa tónsmíðanemendur fengið að starfa með hópnum að mótun nýrra verka sem nemendur hafa samið fyrir hópinn undir leiðsögn Matthiasar Engler, slagverksleikara. Á tónleikunum fá að hljóma ný verk nemenda í hljóðfæratónsmíðum.

As part of this year’s Dark Music Days festival, the German brass ensemble APPARAT has been collaborating with composition students from the Iceland University of the Arts in a series of creative workshops. Under the guidance of percussionist Matthias Engler, the students have developed new works written especially for the ensemble.

This concert presents the premiere performances of these fresh and inventive compositions, showcasing the next generation of Icelandic composers and their dialogue with one of Europe’s most adventurous brass groups.

Á tónleikum sínum frumflytur Magnús Jóhann ný verk eftir tónskáldin Ingibjörgu Elsu Turchi og Tuma Árnasonar, ásamt því að þau Magnús Jóhann og Bára Gísladóttir, tónskáld og kontrabassaleikari, flytja verk af væntanlegri plötu þeirra beggja sem inniheldur spunaverk fyrir Ondes Martenot og kontrabassa.

The performer, record producer and composer Magnús Jóhann Ragnarsson has in recent years fallen in love with one of the oldest electronic instruments in music history, the Ondes Martenot, designed by the French musicologist Maurice Martenot in 1928. At this concert, Magnús Jóhann will premiere new works by composers Ingibjörg Elsa Turchi and Tumi Árnason. Magnús Jóhann and composer and double bassist Bára Gísladóttir will also perform works from their upcoming album, featuring improvisations for Ondes Martenot and double bass.

Innblástur verksins er fenginn úr orðum þýska heimspekingsins Hönnuh Arendt: „til að vera til þarf að fela suma veruleika, á meðan aðra veruleika, þvert á móti, verður að opinbera.“

Verkið var pantað af Myrkum músíkdögum og Klang Festival í Danmörku og er hluti af samstarfsverkefni á milli Norðurlandanna og Skotlands, Northern Connection.

How to Ruin Someone’s Career as a Violist by Danish composer S. Gerup is the result of a collaboration between S. Gerup and violist Þórhildur Magnúsdóttir.

S. Gerup writes: “As a composer, I have set out to work with suffering that can generally be disabling for anyone — such as break up, miscarriage, and severe illness. In How to Ruin Someone's Career as a Violist we want to expose the lack of ability to perform, that these conditions bring, through a classically trained violist. The work revolves around those various forms of internalized pain. It’s inspiration comes from the German philosopher Hannah Arendt who writes that “in order to exist, some realities must be kept hidden, while others, on the contrary, must be made public.”

The work was commissioned by Dark Music Days and Klang Festival in Denmark and is part of the Nordic–Scottish collaborative project Northern Connection.

The German brass quartet APPARAT will premiere a new workby Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir, Intraloper –the result of a collaboration between the composer and the ensemble, written especially for the occasion of the festival.

GeimDýragarðurinn er tölvuleikur þeirra Steinunnar Eldflaugar Harðardóttur, tónskálds og tölvuleikjahönnuðar og Jon Arthur Marrable, tölvuleikjahönnuðar og byggir á hljóð- og myndheimi Steinunnar sem mætti lýsa sem litríkum og fullum af gáska og leikgleði. Iðkendur leiksins ferðast þar um GeimDýragarðinn og safna hljóðbútum úr lögum Steinunnar sem finna má vítt og breitt um heim leiksins. Útgáfa leiksins ber vott um nýstárlega leið tónlistarútgáfu í samtímanum, jafnframt því að vera fullkominn samruni þess mynd- og tónheims og leikgleði sem einkennir list Steinunnar.

Gestum Myrkra músíkdaga býðst að spila leik Steinunnar og Jon Arthur á stórum skjá í Kaldalóni, Hörpu.

SpaceSafari is a computer game, developed by composer and developer Steinunn Eldflaug Harðardóttir and developer Jon Arthur Marrable. The game is founded on Steinunn Eldflaug’s, colorful, fun and playful audio and visual world. Players of the game travel through the Space Zoo and collect audio clips from Steinunn's songs that can be found far and wide throughout the game's world. The game's release is a testament to the innovative way of music publishing in the contemporary era, while also being a perfect fusion of the visual and musical world and the joy of play that characterizes Steinunn's art.

Dark Music Days’ guests have the unique opportunity to play the game on a big screen in Harpa’s Kaldalón Hall.

Jafnframt verða flutt nýleg kammerverk eftir Gunnar Andreas Kristinsson og Gísla Magnússon, ásamt frumflutningi á nýju verki eftir tónskáldatvíeykið「ronju」& Masaya Ozaki.

The Caput Ensemble's annual concert at Dark Music Days is a festival highlight, and this year they present five exciting works. The program includes chamber pieces by Gunnar Andreas Kristinsson, Gísi Magnússon, a premiere of a work by「ronja」& Masaya Ozaki, as well as two solo concertos by Hugi Guðmundsson and Veronique Vaka.

Í sönglagaflokki sínum sækir M. Alberto innblástur víða að og má þar finna fjölbreyttar tilvísanir í ólíkar áttir, allt frá andlegri naumhyggju (e. spiritual minimalism), afró-karabískri helgitónlist til íslenskra þjóðlaga. Verkinu er ætlað að draga fram dulda og forboðna þræði sem finna má sameiginlega í trúar- og helgilífi samfélaga eyja Karíbahafsins og Íslands. Í flutningi verksins skapast nokkurs konar helgirými sem nýtist til ígrundunar á þessum tengingum á milli þessara menningarsvæða. Til hugleiðingar um áhrif evrópskrar nýlendustefnu á menningar- og trúarlíf þessara svæða en í senn er verkið nokkurs konar lofgjörð um seiglu þessara samfélaga, minningar þeirra og því að upphefja hið helga í daglegu lífi.

MIRA ZUMBI by M.Alberto reimagines the traditional song cycle through spoken word, song, and live electronics. Drawing on spiritual minimalism, Afro-Caribbean ritual music, and folk traditions, the work uncovers hidden and often forbidden stories linking Caribbean and Icelandic spiritual heritage. Through field research and sound exploration, Dúplum Duo creates a ritual space for reconnection—reflecting on the impact of European colonialism while celebrating resilience, memory, and the sacred within everyday life.

Samstarf Menntaskóla í Tónlist og Myrkra Músíkdaga er ætlað að veita nemendum skólans tækifæri á að kafa ofan í fjölbreyttan heim samtímatónlistarinnar. Sér í lagi tónlist starfandi tónskálda í samtímanum og fá þar liðsauka frá höfundunum sjálfum við að kanna þær ólíku birtingarmyndir sem tónlist tekur sér í samtímanum.

The collaboration between the College of Music and Dark Music Days is intended to give the school’s students the opportunity to explore the varied world of contemporary music. Furthermore they get  into the music of contemporary composers and receive support from the composers themselves in exploring the diverse forms that music takes in the present day.

Allt frá stofnun hópsins árið 2012 hefur Strokkvartettinn Siggi lagt ríka áherslu á náið samstarf við tónskáld og listafólk við sköpun nýrra verka og hefur kvartettinn frumflutt fjölda nýrra verka sem samin hafa verið sérstaklega fyrir hópinn. 

Á tónleikum Strokkvartettsins Sigga á Myrkum músíkdögum frumflytur hópurinn tvö ný verk sem samin hafa verið sérstaklega fyrir hópinn að þessu tilefni. Verk Arngerðar Maríu Árnadóttur, Strengjakvartett nr. 2, er verk í tveimur þáttum sem bera nöfnin Undir kvöldhimni og Síðasti litur sumarsins. Í nýju verki Péturs Eggertssonar, Samleið, stíga flytjendur inn í leikjaheim Péturs þar sem leikreglur stýra útkomu verksins. Ákvarðanatökur flytjenda í augnabliki flutningsins hafa þar áhrif á útkomu verksins og getur meðal annars leitt til þess að verkið sjálft reynist sigurvegari síns eigins leiks.

Siggi String Quartet was founded in 2012 and has, since then, placed great emphasis on collaborating closely with composers and artists in the creation of new works, resulting in numerous premieres of works composed specifically for the group. For this year’s Dark Music Days, Siggi String Quartet premieres two new works, composed specifically for the group for this occasion. Arngerður María Árnadóttir's String Quartet No. 2 features two distinct movements with evocative titles. The first movement is called Under the Evening Sky, and the second is named The Last Color of Summer, suggesting a poetic and atmospheric approach to the composition. In Pétur Eggertsson's innovative work Samleið, performers enter a game-like world where the rules dynamically shape the outcome. The performers’ spontaneous decisions can transform the work, potentially allowing the piece itself to become the victor of its own intricate musical game.

Píanókvartettinn Negla flytur þrjá nýja píanókvartetta eftir tónskáldin Arngerði Maríu Árnadóttur, Huga Guðmundsson og Ingibjörgu Ýri Skarphéðinsdóttur. Efnisskráin endurspeglar fjölbreyttan blæ- og áferðaríkan hljóðheim píanókvartettsformsins. Í verkunum hafa tónskáldin sótt innblástur víða að, þar á meðal í íslenskan þjóðlagaarf og úr þeim skapað ólíka hljóðheima, þar sem oft á tíðum leynast djúpar tilfinningar undir friðsælu yfirborði tónlistarinnar.

The piano quartet Negla performs three new piano quartets by composers Arngerður María Árnadóttir, Hugi Guðmundsson and Ingibjörg Ýr Skarphéðinsdóttir. The repertoire reflects the diverse, nuanced and textured soundscape of the piano quartet form. In their works, the composers have drawn inspiration from many places, including Icelandic folk music, and from them they have created different soundscapes, where deep emotions often lurk beneath the peaceful surface of the music.

Quantongue Lessons eftir Ragnar Árna Ólafsson og Luke Deane er eins konar þáttaröð sem tekur á sig ólík form eftir tilefnum og getur þar tekið á sig form vídeólistar jafnt sem lifandi flutnings. Fyrsti þáttur raðarinnar var frumsýndur á Myrkum músíkdögum 2025 í formi stuttmyndar, en að þessu sinni tekur Quantongue Lessons á sig form lifandi flutnings með nærveru Ragnars og Luke.

Í þáttum Quantongue Lessons spinnur Ragnar á gítarinn, með röddinni og hvers kyns hlutum eða myndefni og Luke syngur fallega og stundum á vísvitandi ljótan hátt. Þeir tala líka hreinskilnislega saman um það sem þeim dettur í hug og stundum er þetta skrítið og afhjúpandi.

Quantongue Lessons vekur okkur, á óvæntan hátt, til umfjöllunar um hina sameiginlegu nútíð sem flytjendur og áhorfendur deila sín á milli. Því hefur verið lýst sem „hreinu brjálæði“, „næsta stigi“ og „spennandi blöndu af algjöru frelsi og nákvæmni“.

Ragnar Árni Ólafsson and Luke Deane have created odd and surprising compositions together consistently over the past decade, beginning with seminal work In Hail (2016) which explored notions of reversed-time both musically, audibly and on-stage, and Ænd (2020), a composition which took place across a 30 year extended present, and therefore was both an initial research, and something that was already finished. Their joint fascination with time, relativity and what constitutes the "present moment" has led them to create a unique part-improvised TV Show. Ragnar improvises using his guitar, voice and any objects or subjects in the room, and Luke sings beautifully and sometimes in a suddenly deliberately ugly way. They also talk candidly to each other about whatever comes up at the front of their minds, and sometimes this is strange and revealing. This work wakes us up, in an unexpected way, and shows us unique impressions of our shared present as performers and viewers. It's been described as "pure insanity", "next-level" and "a thrilling combination of total freedom and meticulous precision".

The project is a kind of series consisting of different improvised elements, video art, dialogues and more. The first episode of the series premiered at Dark Music Days in 2025.

Millirými er rýmið milli manns og náttúru, þar sem byggt land og umhverfi mætast. Á byggðarmörkum má gjarnan finna nýbyggingar og hálfkláraða grunna, en jafnframt stundum hús í niðurníðslu og yfirgefin iðnaðarrými.

Tónlistarhóparnir Stelkur og Steinalda eiga það sameiginlegt að vera tónskáldaleiddir flytjendahópar sem sérhæfa sig í flutningi tónlistar forsprakka hópanna. Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson leiðir hópinn Steinöldu sem mun koma til með að flytja verk hans Hugleiðingar um nýtingu afganga sem er hljómhviða tengd Esso bensín- og smurstöðinni sem var eitt sinn á Hörpureitnum. Charles Ross leiðir tónlistarhópinn Stelk sem mun flytja 2 ný verk eftir hann, New Forest og Ditch Grmphn. Að endingu munu sveitirnar leiða saman hesta sína og flytja verk þar sem Charles Ross hefur samið tónlist ofan á einn kafla úr Landvættunum fjórum eftir Guðmund Stein.

Edgelands is the space between the man made and its environment. It is where you find half built houses, abandoned houses and ditches that might one day become something.

The music groups Stelkur and Steinalda are both composer-led groups of performers who specialize in performing the music of the group's leaders. Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson leads the group Steinalda which will perform his work, Contemplations on the utilization of leftovers, which is a memorial of sorts for a gas station that used to be right around where Harpa is. Charles Ross leads the ensemble Stelkur and they will premiere two new pieces his, namely New Forest og Ditch Grmphn. Also he has written music on top of a movement from Guðmundur Steinn's Landvættirnar fjórar and in this both ensembles and both composers will join forces.

Kvikmynd Knut Olaf Sunde, Himdalen, er um klukkustundarlöng skrásetning á 13 tíma tónlistargjörningi sem Knut Olaf stóð fyrir Himdalen í Suðaustur-Noregi í nóvember 2018.

Knut Olaf Sunde's film, Himdalen, is an hour-long documentary of a 13-hour musical performance that Knut Olaf staged at Himdalen in southeastern Norway in November 2018.

Kammersveit Reykjavíkur frumflytur tvö verk eftir Hauk Þór Harðarson og Tryggvar M. Baldvinsson ásamt verki eftir Þuríði Jónsdóttur. Einsöngvari er Herdís Anna Jónasdóttir og stjórnandi er Hjörtur Páll Eggertsson.

Hægt er að koma og fara að eigin vild. Viðburðurinn krefst ekki séstakrar tungumálaþekkingar, en hægt verður að spyrja spurninga á íslensku og ensku.

In collaboration with Dark Music Days, Harpa invites you to an open music workshop for children and families. This is a unique opportunity to bathe in sound – experience through play with sounds and tones how different tones and frequencies can affect the body.

You can come and go as you please during the workshop. The event does not require special language knowledge, but questions can be asked in Icelandic and English.
